Program Overview: Children’s Education Program
StARS Children’s Education Program (CEP) offers schooling for refugee students from grade 1 to grade 11. The program has 300 students from many different countries. The school year has three terms. The classes take place from Monday to Thursday and Saturday.
Role
Under the supervision of the CEP Coordinator, the English Literature teacher will join a team of 19 teachers in the Children’s Education Program to teach English literature for senior classes. The English Literature teacher will be responsible for teaching, preparing, and delivering lessons for his/her classes according to the timetable.
Responsibilities
Teaching
● To teach 15-17 hours per week
● To spend the same amount of teaching hours a week on preparation at StARS offices
● To establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
● To prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
● To prepare and deliver lessons to students on topics such as novels, poetry, plays, and different types of prose
● To plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
● To select and obtain materials and supplies such as textbooks
● To maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
● To prepare and mark the exams of the classes and submit them on time according to the dates agreed by the CEP coordinator.
● To prepare students’ progress reports and submit them on time.
● To use a variety of instructional strategies, such as group discussion, brainstorming etc
● To participate in registration, placement tests, and parents’ meetings
● To attend training, staff meetings and cover classes as instructed by the CEP coordinator
● To cooperate with other staff in developing teaching aids
● To establish class rules and maintain standards of student’s behavior as needed
● To assess students’ achievement through formal and informal methods
● To supervise students in and out of the classroom
● To upload lesson plans, instructional materials, course syllabus, class work, homework records and test results in the Education Department data store
● To manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures according to the Student’s Handbook.
● To attend and assist in all CEP events such as closing ceremonies, sports day, and graduation
● To maintain professional confidentiality regarding students’ information
● To communicate cooperatively and effectively with the CEP coordinator
● To treat all members of StARS community with respect
● To report any signs of risk to students and staff to the CEP coordinator immediately, in line with the StARS and Education Department child protection policies
Education Department
● To endeavor to fulfill the vision of the Education Department
● To facilitate open communication and coordination with other programs in the department
● To engage in the collegial atmosphere of the Education Department
● To further the development of the Education Department and StARS by feeding new ideas and innovation to senior staff
● To perform additional duties in order to support and advance StARS and the Education Department
● Other duties as required
Requirements
● To have a Bachelor degree of English Literature
● To have two years or more previous experience in teaching English literature to high school students
● To have proficiency in spoken and written English
Working hours
● 35 hours per week, to include 15-17 teaching hours
● Class working hours, Monday to Thursday and Saturday: 8.30am – 2.45pm
Supervised by: Children’s Education Program Coordinator
Salary: 3600 EGP per month after completion of a three-month probation period (initially 3300EGP) plus 175 EGP per month medical allowance and 50 EGP per month pension contribution.
